Introduction to Cyanotypes with Dale - May 2022
Cyanotype is one of the very first photographic printing techniques, producing beautiful blue images.
In this introductory class you’ll learn all the basics of this amazing alternative photographic technique. We’ll make prints using the Classic formula as well as the “New” formula. You’ll learn about the chemicals and how to mix the preparations, the various papers to use, and the processing method to produce and the stabilize the print. We will also cover print toning and briefly discuss other materials you can use as well as a brief discussion of digital negatives.
By the time you leave you’ll have some gorgeous blue prints and the know-how to create more at home!
Beginner level Adults and Teens

Bring to class: Notebook, pencil, protective eyewear (or use ones available at ArtWaves)
Masks, vax'd (over 5), and distancing for staff and participant safety.
About the Instructor: Dale Joyce is a fine art print maker and commercial photographer residing in Maine. His love of coastal Maine and photography both originated while spending summers on Swan's Island with his grandparents. Enamored with the primal beauty of the landscape, classic architecture, genuine sense of community, and hardworking spirit of the people, Dale chose to move there permanently, to pursue his passion full time in his studio and gallery on Swan's Island, Harbor View Studio. He also operates a commercial photography studio, Down East Photography, in downtown Ellsworth helping businesses with high quality images for the marketing and social media.
