About

Our History

In 2013, local artist Liz Cutler came up with the idea of ArtWaves MDI -- and others agreed that Mount Desert Island was in need of a Community Arts Center!

In 2017, ArtWaves became a 501C3 nonprofit organization. ArtWaves was able to purchase our 1.75 acre campus in December 2019 thanks to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and a local benefactor.

Liz continues to inspire the community through her classes and workshops held at ArtWaves and around the MDI area.

Our Vision is connecting our community with the power of art.

Our Mission is to provide residents and visitors of Mount Desert Island, and the surrounding area, with accessible, affordable, and dynamic art and movement experiences.

Nikki Moser (Executive Director)

As an educator and program builder she co-founded STEAMworks a not-for-profit educational space using STEAM. She was co-chair of the 2018 International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art. In 2017 she was awarded 2nd Prize in Sculpture, Art of the State, at the Museum of Pennsylvania. In 2010 she co-founded Keystone Iron Works, an Iron Casting program for at risk high school students, which has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts awards, along with almost yearly ARTS Engage grants, and The F. Lammont Belin and a Willary Foundation Award.  She has an MFA in Studio Art from MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art, and a BFA from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.  She regularly exhibits her work and has sculptures in many private collections.  She sews, likes playing with fire and makes excellent chocolate chip cookies.

Jamie VanderMolen (Program Coordinator)

Jamie is an experienced Arts Program Administrator who has worked for museums, arts nonprofits, community organizations and her own pottery studio in Pittsburgh.  As an artist herself, she loves being surrounded by art and other artists.

Jamie moved here from Pittsburgh a couple years ago and is still delighted every time it snows. She spent her first year here knitting, making applesauce, cutting up pine branches to make pillows, making mosaics, adding blueberries to everything and exploring the island with Otis. Otis has happily made the transition from city dog to country dog
