Poetry Reading/Flash Art Response

Tuesday April 5th 5:30pm-7:00 pm

Like to Draw? Paint? Collage? Stained Glass Mosaics?

Maybe you have always wanted to be an illustrator?

Calling all who like to create pictures in response to words!

Join us at ArtWaves for this free evening event as part of our celebration of Poetry Month.

Local poet Paul Weiss will read 3-4 poems then distribute copies to our artists. In partners or by themselves, those who attend will create "flash art" (within an hour) in response to one of the poems.

ArtWaves will have lots of materials at hand to create!

Between 6:30 and 7:00, each poem for which visual responses have been created will be read again by Paul and the flash art for that poem will be shared. If the artists are willing, images will be posted in conjunction with the poems as part of the Artists & Poets exhibit at the Southwest Harbor Public Library in May.

About Paul Weiss - Paul Weiss began serious practice in zen as well as tai chi in 1966 and spent years in several training and monastic settings, including in schools and clinics in China. In 1981 he founded The Whole Health Center in Bar Harbor, Maine, where he teaches, counsels, and offers meditation retreats and his True Heart, True Mind Intensive. A life-long poet, he is the author of two collections of poems and essays, You Hold This and Moonlight Leaning Against an Old Rail Fence: Approaching Dharma as Poetry.   The Dharma of Direct Experience is due out in November - Simon & Schuster

Full Program

Event 1: Initial meeting Friday April 1 5:30pm at ArtWaves - Fine Arts Studio, Poets and artists who are participating meet and exchange art pieces and poems. Cap at 10 max poets and 10 max artists. Poets bring a poem and artists bring in a piece of visual art.

Event 2: Poetry Reading/Flash Visual Response, Tuesday April 5th 5:30pm- 7:00 pm at ArtWaves - Kaleidoscope Studio
Paul Weiss reads 3-4 poems and comes with copies of these. In partners or by themselves, participants do "flash art" in response to one of the poems that they select using the materials provided. At the end of the event, each poem that has visual responses is read again and the flash art for that poem is shared.

Event 2a: Poetry Reading/Flash Visual Response for Families, Saturday, April 9, 11am-12pm at SWHPL
Paul Weiss reads 3-4 family friendly/kids’ poems and comes with copies of these. In partners or by themselves, participants do "flash art" in response to one of the poems that they select using the materials provided. At the end of the event, each poem that has visual responses is read again and the flash art for that poem is shared.

Event 3: Art Showing/Flash Poems for Everyone, Tuesday, April 12 5:30-7:00 p.m. at SWHPL
Two artists each bring two pieces. These are set up around the room and participants choose one to inspire a flash poem. Then the poems associated with each piece of art are shared before the artist shares his/her response and "story" behind the piece.

Event 4: Final Reveal Tuesday April 26 5:30-7:00p.m. at ArtWaves
Twenty Artists and Poets reconvene, and each pair presents the work they did. There is a small reception. We could consider Zooming the event so others could see the "reveal" of the work beyond the people who participated. Because of COVID, best to stay limited.

Event 5: Exhibit at SWHPL for the month of May.
Those pieces become the pieces for the show that goes up in the SWPL in May in pairs: poem and piece of visual art as well as flash work that people want to share
