African Mud Cloth

Jessica Harris

Friday, Feb. 10, 11:30-1

African mud cloth, aka “bogolanfini,” is all of the rage right now. It’s based off complexity found in simplicity and is often composed of simple linear patterns applied to fabric that has been dyed with mud (however, we won’t be getting muddy).  The patterns tell stories, basic symbols that everyone agrees on – a twirl for life and a concentric circle to represent the world, for example. Learn and explore techniques for creating your own mud cloth inspired stamp pattern, using the linocut printmaking process. We will then apply your unique pattern to cotton fabric to use as a table cloth or runner. You will go home with your own re-usable design and tapestry. Instruction and materials are provided.
